I’m sure by now everybody knows that going green in the bathroom doesn’t mean grabbing a gallon or two of earthy green paint and transforming your bathroom walls into foliage. Going green means making eco-friendly choices that are kind to mother nature by conserving, protecting natural resources, and making choices that have the least impact on the planet.
You probably have heard of the catch phrase: Recycle, Reuse, Reduce. There are many obvious eco-friendly ways to go green such as: recycle what you can, conserve water, drive an economical car, grow your own veggies, etc. Those are the most popular ideas that get the most press. But, did you ever think about how you can make your bathroom more earth friendly?

Look for ways you can conserve water around your home.
According to the EPA, the biggest household use of water occurs in the bathroom. The toilet alone accounts for more than 26% of the water used in a typical home.
If you install a water efficient toilet, shower head, and faucet, you could decease water usage tremendously.
Add conservative and eco-friendly practices such as not letting the water run when brushing your teeth or shaving and you could save thousands of gallons of water a year. Every drop saved helps save the planet!
Conserve Electricity
Did you know your lightbulbs could be using up more energy than they should? Manufacturers have made tremendous advances over the old incandescent light bulb. Now you actually have choices and you’ll need them since the government has passed a law that will eventually eliminate incandescent light bulbs.
The two best choices for eco-friendly lightbulbs are CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) and LED (light emitting diodes) bulbs.
For example, a LED light bulb requires 6 to 8 watts of energy to produce the same light as a 60-watt incandescent and the LED lasts 40 times longer. And even better news, the cost for LEDs keeps coming down as the technology improves.
Breathe Fresh Air
Many culprits can ruin indoor air quality. Here are some simple eco-friendly ways to improve the air quality in your bathroom. Use a correctly sized ventilation fan to remove stale air and moisture. You might even consider putting a potted plant in your bathroom window. House plants naturally remove carbon dioxide and toxins from the air and release fresh oxygen into your home, and they help your bathroom look nicer, too!
Trash cleaners with caustic chemicals in favor of cleaners made of natural ingredients, or better yet make you own cleaning solutions. Paint your bathroom with low VOC paints, which have very low odor and off gassing.
Old habits are hard to break, but with a little effort you can have a green bathroom that is mother earth friendly. Invest a little money upfront and then save money while you save the planet.
